The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) joined the international community in observing the World Environment Day that is marked globally every year on June 5th. To mark the day, CAVS, in liaison with like-minded stakeholders planted 200 tree seedlings at the College Dam, off Lower Kabete Road.
The participating stakeholders were; Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Project Management Institute (PMI), Lower Kabete Residents’ Association and the University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA). The following species of trees were planted:
- Giant bamboo
- Syzygium
- Cordia Africana
- Olea Africana
Prof. Horace Ochanda, the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Enterprise) represented the University Management at the function. CAVS has embarked on a project to restore riparian zones around the dam, an initiative that is in line with this year’s World Environment Day theme "Ecosystem Restoration" and aspirations of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
The College is grateful to everyone who participated in making the tree planting exercise a success.
