I wish to take this opportunity to introduce the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nairobi. The main mandate of the faculty is to answer to needs of the country and offer answers towards food and nutrition security with the hope that translates to increased business in agriculture and related activities and economic empowerment of the stakeholders. This the faculty provides through its teaching, research and outreach/extension activities, as espoused through our vision and mission statements. A visit to the faculty website will provide will reveal a repository of intellectuals with diverse expertise equipped to enable us to achieve our goals
The faculty structure has four departments; The Plant Science & Crop Protection (PS&CP), Land Agricultural Resources Management & Agricultural Technology (LARMAT), Food Science, Nutrition & Technology (FSNT), Agricultural Economics. In addition to the four departments, the faculty of agriculture shares the Department of Animal Production, housed in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in offering its programmes. Each of the departments is endowed with highly qualified academic and technical support staff. The faculty has unlimited access to irrigated land for field-based research and greenhouses for controlled experimentation. The laboratory infrastructure is well established and under continuous upgrading. The Faculty of Agriculture currently has eight (8) undergraduate and nineteen (19) Masters degree programmes spread out in the departments. The training programmes are regularly reviewed to incorporate emerging scientific and technological issues in the agricultural, food and environmental sciences. Notable among such rapid changes related to knowledge in the areas of biotechnology, information technology and environmental quality. Our programmes have a strong practical component, which puts emphasize on participation in carrying out relevant research and outreach activities aimed not only in increased agricultural production but also in environmental protection. About 95 of the academic staff in the Faculty are trained up to PhD level. In partnership with researchers from other universities, and national and international research institutions, over the years, our staff have been involved in cutting edge research in various fields, ranging from agronomy, crop protection and soil sciences, to food technology and nutrition, and agricultural economics.
Given that Agriculture is still the backbone of the economy and the main source of export earnings, the Faculty of Agriculture will continue to play a pivotal role in improving the livelihoods of the Kenya population. Consequently, significant breakthroughs have been made particularly in Diagnostics of Crop Pests and Diseases, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Crop Improvement, Appropriate Crop Husbandry Technologies to mitigate the vagaries of climate change, production of environmentally friendly goods and services, diversified food products and expertise ready to provide extension and community services. To this end, the faculty has commercialized 11 varies of beans that are now being sold in supermarkets and is known for the production of the Bio-fix fertilizer. The Faculty also has established local and international partnerships with institutions and scientists to enable it to execute its functions better. This has expanded opportunities for capacity building, knowledge sharing and fundraising. Clearly, our faculty will not have achieved its mandate without the support of its members of staff, the principal of the College of Agriculture and veterinary science and under the strong and wise leadership of our vice-chancellor.
