TRAINING OF HORTICULTURAL PROCESSING MSMES AND BUSINESS INTERMEDIARIES

In conjunction with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and SUSTALDE Fundacion (Spain), the University of Nairobi through Hortigreen Project led by the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology and Wangari Maathai Institute trained horticultural MSMEs and business intermediaries on sustainable and efficient use of key natural resources (water and electricity) as well as waste management. The Hortigreen project has been drumming up support for green processing whereby processors are encouraged to consider sustainable production and consumption as per the UN-SGD number 12. A total of 25 participants were trained both physically for those who made it to Qaribu Hotel and virtually. The project hopes that at the end of 2021 up to 50 processing MSMEs will be certified ISO14001 Environmental Management System. The staff members involved in this project include Dr. G Abong, Prof. MW Okoth, Prof. J. Muthama and Ms. L Obiero being supported by Mr. B. Nyankone, Mr. E Geoffrey, Mr. D Gekonge.
