We are excited to announce the 6th edition of the Nairobi Innovation Week that will take place on 26th - 28th April, 2022 in the University of Nairobi's Main Campus at the Great Court and the Hyslop Parking. 

This year, the focus is on the big 4 agenda, energy, environment and ICT and cross-cutting innovation. 

We are looking for innovation in thematic areas from our students, faculties, UoN alumni, local and international firms and we're inviting partners to this great event. 

In the previous edition of the Nairobi Innovation Week, we managed to attract 2000+ delegates and 150+ exhibitors to the event.

The Office of Career Services invites applications for Cohort 5 of the Arava International Centre for Agricultural Training (AICAT) 11 Months Diploma Program.

This program is run in partnership with AICAT with the main focus being to impart professional, theoretical and practical knowhow and skills in advanced agricultural studies, based on "Learning by Doing". The program takes place at the Arava region, in the southern part of Israel which is a desert.

Twenty (20) scholarships for the academic year 2022/2023 for Undergraduate, Masters and Doctorial programs eligible to Kenyans

The Government of the People’s Republic of China is offering Twenty (20) scholarships for the academic year 2022/2023 for Undergraduate, Masters and Doctorial programs eligible to Kenyans.

A. ELIGIBILITY

Undergraduate

Applicant should meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum KCSE mean Grade of B (plain)
  • Not more than 25 years of age
  • Have an original KCSE certificate
  • Strong grades on major subjects that are key to the specialty preferred
  • Completed secondary education in the last three (3) years

Masters

  • Graduated with a Bachelors degree of at least Upper Second-Class honors for Masters
  • Be under 35 years of age

PhD

  • Be under 40 years of age.
  • Hold a relevant Masters Degree from a recognized University.

Borrowing of Books by Postgraduate Students not Issued with students' ID

BORROWING OF LIBRARY BOOKS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS NOT ISSUED WITH STUDENT IDENTITY CARD

 The Library Department has come up with temporary measures to ensure that new postgraduate students who are in the process of obtaining student identification (ID) cards are able to borrow books and use the Library in the absence of the ID.

 The students should visit the Library Circulation Desk for Library registration. The following documents will be required during the registration:

 1.    Student’s original National Identity Card;

 2.   A letter from the enrolling department showing that the student is a bona-fide member of the University.

 To borrow or return Library books, presentation of the National Identity Card for verification is mandatory.

 The students can also utilize the vast electronic information resources available on the Library website: https://uonlibrary.uonbi.ac.ke/

Call for Session Proposals by 30 Jan: IAP Triennial Conference and Worldwide Meeting of the Young Academies

We are pleased to announce the call for session proposals for the IAP Triennial Conference and Worldwide Meeting of the Young Academies!
The theme of the meeting will be, “Inclusive Excellence: Harnessing knowledge for sustainable societies”. The meeting is hosted by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and co-organized by IAP, the Global Young Academy (GYA), NAS, RSC, the RSC College, and the NAS New Voices Program.
It will take place from Tuesday – Thursday, November 1-3, 2022, online and at Biosphere2, Arizona, USA (hybrid format).
In addition to dedicated sessions focused on major IAP and GYA/young academy projects, there will be 4 to 5 sessions selected from proposals,
submitted from senior and young academies, that provide concrete examples of the power of inclusive excellence frameworks to help
address global challenges such as climate change, pandemic preparedness, and improving human health and education accessibility.

Session proposals that illustrate how inequities in our academic institutions may be addressed are also sought. Proposals should
address at least one aspect of inclusive excellence, such as diversity, inclusion, sense of belonging, equity, accessibility, community engagement, and open access to data/science/information.
Proposals that include several academies, including collaborative proposals from young and senior academics are encouraged. The format
of the session could be a panel with Q&A or an interactive moderated discussion.
All IAP member academies and young academies are eligible to submit proposals. Additional details are in the attached concept note.

ICMA scholarship programme 2022 - deadline for applications: 15 January 2022

This scholarship programme is open  to young people  who are interested in a career in finance, between 19 to 30, from the following countries in Sub-Saharan Africa: Ethiopia Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and South Africa.

As part of ICMA's mission to raise standards and support inclusion in financial markets, ICMA is offering scholarships for 2022 to individuals from a number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia-Pacific who are unable to pursue a financial qualification due to their economic circumstances.

Thirty-five (35) scholarships will be available to young people who are interested in a career in finance from the following countries in Sub-Saharan Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe; and the following countries in Asia Pacific: India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

ICMA has been active in the aforementioned countries through its efforts to develop the local repo markets alongside capacity-building in partnership with a number of development institutions such as Frontclear in Africa and the Asian Development Bank in Asia.

The scholarships provide an opportunity to study for one of the ICMA Diplomas, namely:

  • ICMA Diploma in Debt Capital Markets
  • ICMA Diploma Securities & Derivatives
  • ICMA Diploma in Financial Market Operations

Each diploma pathway includes taking the prescribed foundation and advanced level courses along with two specialist courses and/or ICMA workshops. This executive education programme is delivered in partnership with the ICMA Centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading.

These diplomas are internationally recognised qualifications taught by experienced market professionals which can kick-start a career in financial markets.

All the courses which make up the diplomas can be studied online over 12 months as a mix of self-study and virtual classroom programmes, and they include online exams. The ICMA scholarship will fully cover the course and examination fees for the relevant Diploma.
 
Candidates must be between 19 and 30 years old at time of application and may be in full-time education, working in finance already or looking to move into it.

A good level of education (but not necessarily a University degree), interest in financial markets and proficiency in English are necessary application criteria. 

How to apply

The deadline for submissions for the 2022 intake is 15 January 2022.

  • Open to citizens of the following countries:
  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Asia Pacific: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Candidates must be between 19 and 30 years old at time of application;
  • Good level of education (not necessarily a University degree).

  To start the process potential students must submit all of the following:

  • a 500-word statement explaining their background, career plans, and why they should qualify for a scholarship;
  • a Curriculum Vitae including your nationality and country of residence, full contact details;
  • academic records and evidence of educational attainment;
  • two reference letters including contact details of the persons providing them.

About the selection process:
 
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria;
A panel of ICMA staff will shortlist and make the final selection;

Scholarship outcomes:
Scholarship selection will take place in the last two weeks of January 2022 and shortlisted candidates may be called in for a further interview (to be conducted virtually);
Announcements of successful recipients will be made by mid-February 2022. If you have not heard from us by this date, then please assume that you have not been selected. We will be unable to contact unsuccessful applicants individually or provide feedback.
Successful recipients must complete the programme within 12 months of commencing their first course.
 
In addition, candidates must pass the exams for the foundation and advanced courses in order to move forward with the programme, failure to do so will invalidate the scholarship. ICMA will only cover exam fees once for each level.

Call for Sustainable Management and Operations (SuMO) PhD Scholarship applications

Sustainable Management and Operations (SuMO) is a new three year PhD program. It is planned to be offered at the Kuehne Logistics University (KLU) through the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nairobi, by the Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply. The program is through collaboration between University of Nairobi (UoN), University of Dar El Salaam (UDBS) and Kuehne Logistics University (KLU).

The program targets Junior Managers who will take leadership positions in future and those
wishing to pursue a career in academics. Successful candidates will learn from highly
interdisciplinary team drawn from professors and industry professionals in agribusiness,
operations management, supply chains, agricultural economics, business science and
sustainability. This will holistically equip them with skills and knowledge on sustainable
management which has been missing in the conventional business management trainings, making the program unique.

Who can apply?

One can apply for the SuMO PhD program scholarship if they meet the following criteria:
 An earned MSc, MA or related degree in agribusiness, agricultural economics, operations
management and, supply chains and related fields

 Outstanding academic performance with Second Class Upper Division and above for
undergraduate or equivalent GPA score
 Experience in undertaking qualitative and quantitative research in agribusiness, business,
supply chains, operations management, sustainability or related fields
 Excellent analytical and research skills with proficiency in research, econometric
modelling and in using at least one research software
 Excellent written and spoken English
Desire to venture into an academic career

2. Concept note of 3 pages clearly indicating your research topic, background, problem

Program Overview
The PhD program will take three years on a full-time basis. The first year will be dedicated to
course work and at the same time, the candidate will be expected to develop their proposal with
support from the supervisors. The subsequent two years will be dedicated to research work
including data collection, analysis, preparation of publication papers and final thesis report. The program priority research areas are: Sustainability, Operations Management, Food/Agricultural Logistics and related subjects.
Supervision and support The PhD candidate will have a supervisor from UoN, UDSM and an international professor from KLU or from the global KF academic network. They will also have many great opportunities to enhance their scientific and professional skills from the pool of professors and industry experts from the three universities and Kuenhe Foundation.
Publications Publishing is essential for the program. Therefore candidates will be expected to publish at least two journal articles from their research work before graduating.
Scholarship There will be a scholarship covering University tuition fee, living expenses and research.
