On 3rd October 2022, Kenya’s cabinet under the leadership of his Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto lifted the 10-year ban on importation of GMOs. Opinion is divided on the move to lift the ban. The proponents have welcomed the move as a long overdue intervention to address food and nutrition security. On the other hand, the opponents are more sceptical about the GMOs positive impact – they are concerned about the health and environmental threats they pose.
KeAWARD, the Kenyan chapter of African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD), a professional organization of agricultural scientists has organized a Webinar as part of the efforts to educate and create awareness about GMOs. The Webinar topic is Pathways to Food and Nutrition Security in Kenya: The Role of Genetically Modified Organisms.
