RUFORUM Calls for training programs with Support from Carnegie Cooperation of New York

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), established by ten Vice Chancellors in 2004, is a consortium of 126 African universities operating within 38 countries spanning the African continent. RUFORUM is coordinated by a Secretariat hosted by Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. 

RUFORUM supports universities to address the important and largely unfulfilled role that universities play in contributing to the well‐being of small scale farmers and economic development of countries throughout the sub‐ Saharan Africa region.

Eating Healthy to Boost Our Immunity and Protect Our Bodies from Disease-Causing Infections Including COVID-19

A balanced diet and good nutrition are not only important as a source of energy for our active lives but are critical for our defense against disease. According to the world health organization (WHO) a healthy diet helps to protect against malnutrition in all its forms, as well as non-communicable diseases, including such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.

UNDERSTANDING THE EFFECTS OF THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC ON FOOD SECURITY IN KENYA AND GLOBALLY

The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to exacerbate an already alarming food insecurity situation. Before the emergence of the pandemic, food insecurity was already on the rise in the region due to factors such as climatic shocks and livestock pests and diseases. The desert locust outbreak added to the already growing concerns. It is against this backdrop that the Committee on Fiscal Studies has organized a webinar on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on financing food security in Kenya and globally.

Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Campus Forum

Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN Kenya), and the University of Nairobi held an inaugural session of the CSA Campus Forum on Thursday, 20th February 2020 at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi, 844 Building from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. 

Environmental Impact Assessment & Environmental Audit Course

Applications are invited for admission to the Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA&EA) course at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI). The Course duration is three (3) weeks, from March 9, 2020, to March 27, 2020.

Community and stakeholders Workshop on the Use of Prosopis Julifora (Mezquite)

Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) participated in a workshop under the project “Studying the Use of Mezquite to Improve Welfare of Communities in Arid and Semi-arid Zones of the World”. The project is funded by GCRF, Research England, as part of an Interdisciplinary Research Project Award 2019 led by Dr.

CURRICULUM REVIEW WORKSHOP

The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) held a one-day curriculum review workshop for all academic units. The workshop was held on November 5, 2019, at Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies. The workshop was attended by all heads of academic units, deans, directors, curriculum review experts, quality assurance, the college principal and members of academic staff.

Research Week 2019

The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences hosted the AGRO 2019 Conference and Exhibition during the University of Nairobi Research week, from 22nd to 24th October 2019.

The AGRO Conference and Exhibition was a platform for students, academicians, researchers and Practitioners in agriculture to show case their research outputs through presentations and posters, exchange ideas and network.  The focus was on food security, climate matter and capacity development.

The Champion Cock in the Nairobi International Trade Fair 2019

The supreme champion Cock in the just completed Nairobi International Trade Fair 2019 was from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. The improved indigenous cock  from Field Station farm is fed with feeds formulated within the College, ensuring high quality bird, well fed and effective in breeding for better productivity. This contributes to quality breeds for small scale farmers in support to food and nutritional security in the Country.
